Vienna's English Theatre

Experience World-Class Theatre in English – Right in the Heart of Vienna!

Did you know? Vienna’s English Theatre is the oldest and most renowned English-language theatre in continental Europe! Founded in 1963 by Austrian director Franz Schafranek and his American wife, Yale-trained actress Ruth Brinkmann, it was initially a summer theatre for English-speaking tourists. But the Viennese public fell in love with it, and it quickly became a year-round cultural gem. Since 1997, Julia Schafranek has carried on its legacy as Artistic Executive.

Recent highlights include: Leslie Nielsen’s acclaimed performance as Clarence Darrow, the European premieres of Proof by David Auburn and Edward Albee’s The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia?, the Olivier-winning musical Kat and the Kings, Stones in His Pockets, and Pulitzer Prize winners Doubt and God of Carnage. French icon Annie Girardot also returned in her award-winning role as Madame Marguerite.

Don’t miss out—check out their exciting upcoming performances!
